Small Bathroom Remodel: How I Transformed a Contractor-Grade Space into a Modern Masterpiece

In this post, I’ll show you how I took a small 6×5-foot contractor-grade bathroom and completely transformed it with a custom tiled shower surround, updated fixtures, and modern finishes. Let’s dive into the details and walk through the steps of this amazing renovation.

Step 1: Assessing the Space

The bathroom was a basic contractor package—bland flooring, a sheet mirror, generic lights, and a one-piece shower surround. It was functional but lacked personality. The goal was to make this space bright, stylish, and high-end while maximizing functionality in a small footprint.

Step 2: Removing the Old Fixtures

  1. Toilet & Vanity:
    These were quick to unfasten and remove, but the glued-on mirror required a bit more finesse. We carefully removed it to avoid damage.

  2. Shower Surround:
    Removing a one-piece shower surround is no small task.

    • Tub Spout Tip: Check the underside of the spout for a set screw. If it has one, loosen it to remove the spout. If not, it’s threaded—just unscrew it.
    • After disconnecting the plumbing, I used a reciprocating saw to cut the fiberglass surround into manageable sections. Always wear a dust mask for safety.

  3. Flooring:
    The old flooring came up easily with a pry bar. I replaced it with large-format white tiles to make the space feel bigger. (Check out my separate flooring video for more details!)

Step 3: Preparing for the New Shower

  1. New Tub Installation:

    • I pre-drilled holes in the tub flanges, hooked up the drain and overflow connections, and secured the tub to the studs with screws.
    • Shims were used to ensure the tub was level, avoiding future cracking.

  2. Delta UpStyle Wall System:
    This custom wall system provided a modern subway tile look with a unique accent channel for personalization.

    • Dry Fit & Measurements:
      The right wall required cutouts for plumbing, which I measured and marked carefully.

      • Pro Tip: Add vertical studs every 12 inches instead of relying on 24-inch centers for better support.

    • Adhesive & Installation:
      Using double-sided tape and DAP 3.0 sealant, I secured the wall panels to pre-installed furring strips. Each panel was pressed firmly to ensure a tight fit, and I used 2×4 braces to hold them in place while the adhesive cured.

Step 4: Adding the Custom Accent Channel

The standout feature of the wall system was the custom accent channel, where I installed hexagonal mosaic tiles.

  1. Tile Cutting:

    • I used a tile saw with a zero-clearance cutting surface for precise cuts, especially for small mosaic pieces.
    • Pieces were trimmed to fit perfectly into the channel, ensuring clean edges.

  2. Adhesive Application:

    • Regular mastic doesn’t stick to acrylic, so I applied the DAP 3.0 sealant with a v-notch trowel for a strong bond.
    • Spacers were used to keep tiles aligned, and I carefully adjusted the amount of sealant to avoid excessive squeeze-out.

  3. Grouting:

    • After the adhesive cured for 24 hours, I masked the surrounding areas with painter’s tape and applied unsanded grout to the mosaics.
    • Excess grout was wiped off with a sponge before it dried, and I finished by shaping the grout lines for a clean look.

  4. Final Caulking:

    • I caulked all seams using grout-matching caulk for a seamless transition and used DAP 3.0 for the acrylic joints.

Step 5: Drywall Repairs

  1. Patching:

    • I replaced drywall around the shower using pre-cut strips and taped the seams. For corners, I used L-shaped pieces to simplify mudding.
    • Tip: Apply several thin coats of drywall mud instead of one thick coat to avoid cracking and shrinkage.

  2. Sanding & Painting:
    After sanding, I handed the painting over to Susan, who chose a light gray color to complement the modern aesthetic.

Step 6: Installing Fixtures

  1. Shower Hardware:

    • I installed Delta’s Everly collection, which features elegant curves and a unique tub spout design.
    • After ensuring all openings were properly sealed, I attached the mixing valve cover and showerhead for a polished look.

  2. Toilet, Vanity, & Mirror:

    • The new Delta toilet, vanity with Everly faucet, and modern mirror tied the space together beautifully.

Step 7: The Final Look

The transformation is stunning! The bright subway tile walls, hexagonal mosaic accent, and sleek fixtures make the bathroom feel luxurious and spacious. The new large-format flooring adds to the modern vibe, while the custom touches give the space personality.
