Cabinets are expensive. Do this instead.

Welcome to my latest DIY adventure! In this post, I’ll show you how I transformed a simple room in my home with custom-built cabinets that not only look amazing but are also incredibly functional. What started as a straightforward project turned into a journey full of unexpected twists—and I can’t wait to share the process with you! From hidden seams to last-minute client changes, follow along as I take you through the steps of building these beautiful, budget-friendly cabinets.

Step 1: Planning and Preparing for the Build

The first task was to visualize the layout and figure out exactly how the panels and frames would fit together. I knew the left panels would be glued and installed first, ensuring everything would be perfectly aligned. When it came time to install the upper face frames, I used half a bottle of Titebond’s thick and quick adhesive to secure everything in place, followed by strategic bread nails for extra reinforcement. Though there was a little bit of planning involved to hide seams and keep everything neat, the process was surprisingly straightforward once I got going.

Step 2: Overcoming an Unexpected Change Order

Just when I thought I was on the home stretch, my client spotted some LED bookshelf lights at Ikea, and—well—you know how that goes! A last-minute change order was submitted, and suddenly I found myself with a $349 expense for lights I hadn’t originally planned for. On top of that, I had to figure out how to route the power up to the top of the shelves to make these lights work. After a bit of searching, I found a paintable channel at the hardware store, which I could hide in the corner. Once the books were on the shelves, it would be virtually impossible to notice the power cord running up to the lights.

Step 3: Building the Cabinet Doors

While I initially thought about building drawers, I quickly realized that doors would be a more practical choice for the storage space. Plus, let’s be honest—those doors are going to stay closed 90% of the time! There are several ways to make cabinet doors, and each one has its pros and cons. The easiest method I considered was using MDF to make fake panel doors, with a thinner MDF frame glued on top. However, I didn’t want to compromise on quality, so I decided to go with the tried-and-true method of cutting joints on my table saw.

Interestingly, I learned that many professional cabinet shops don’t even make their own doors! Instead, they outsource the task to specialized door manufacturers. When I got quotes from local shops, I found that outsourcing doors would cost around $55 per door. However, making them myself cost me just $86 for eight doors, including the MDF material and trim. It took about 4 hours to build all the doors, which meant that I saved a significant amount of money and gained some valuable hands-on experience.

Step 4: Installing the Shelves and Final Adjustments

With the doors and frames installed, it was time to focus on the shelving. I didn’t need to overcomplicate this step, so I opted to keep things simple yet efficient. Using pocket holes and corner clamps, I assembled the shelves, making sure everything was square and secure. This ensured that the shelves would support the weight of whatever books, decorations, or knick-knacks my client would eventually put on them.

The key was keeping everything easy to install and functional. I didn’t want to over-engineer the project, but I still wanted the shelves to look sleek and professional. Once the power channels were in place and everything was aligned, it was time for the finishing touches.

Step 5: Painting and Finishing Touches

To give the cabinets that polished look, I primed all the wood with Zinsser BIN primer, which provides a solid base for any finish. After the primer dried, I applied a smooth coat of Rust-Oleum spray paint in a soft, neutral color to match the room’s decor. For the doors, I used a clean, sleek design with inset faces, which gave the cabinets a modern touch.

Step 6: Installing the LED Lights and Hardware

Once the doors and shelves were in place, I attached the hardware. I decided to use simple, elegant handles for the doors, mounted using a cabinet hardware jig. The real challenge, however, was installing the LED lights. I had to route the power cord up the back of the cabinet and make sure the lights were properly wired and positioned. Once done, the soft glow of the LEDs gave the space a beautiful, ambient lighting effect.

The Final Look: Before and After

The transformation was nothing short of amazing! What started as a simple cabinetry project quickly became a functional, stylish feature in the room. The hidden LED lights, clean door design, and custom shelves have turned an ordinary space into something extraordinary. The final result exceeded my expectations, and I’m thrilled with how it all turned out.

Conclusion

This DIY cabinet makeover proves that with a little creativity, patience, and the right tools, you can completely transform a room on a budget. Despite the unexpected changes and challenges, the final product came out beautifully—proving that setbacks can lead to even better results if you stay flexible and problem-solve along the way.

For anyone looking to tackle a similar project, keep in mind the importance of planning ahead and understanding your budget. Whether you’re building from scratch or making small adjustments to a pre-existing space, a little DIY effort can go a long way in creating something functional and stunning. The key takeaway here is: don’t be afraid to make changes, but always stick to your budget—just like I did, even if that budget ended up going a bit over!
